Making Waves in Art and Education
The ocean has always been a source of serenity and, more recently, inspiration in my art practice. I am captivated by the endless wonders of the ocean, which provides habitat for countless marine animals and plants that are integral to the overall health of the planet. The more I learn about the world around me, the more driven I am to explore and understand it.
This sense of discovery shapes both my teaching and artmaking philosophies. My teaching centers on choice-based education: empowering students to express themselves and to learn through exploration driven by their interests. This philosophy extends to my art practice, where I experiment with diverse art mediums and conduct research on the ecological roles of marine life, using discovery as a way to connect with the world around us.
Rooted in the big idea of natural wonder, my thesis reflects this belief by combining research and creativity to celebrate the beauty and complexity of the natural world. This art book, From the Sea A to Z, features a collection of marine life presented through meticulously designed two-page spreads. Each spread integrates scientific research with artistic compositions, thereby highlighting the intricate balance and diversity of marine ecosystems while evoking awe and appreciation for their wonders. In the classroom, I aim to cultivate the same sense of wonder and exploration, encouraging students to connect their personal passions with creative expression.
Art can serve as a powerful tool to convey the magnificence of the natural world. Through artistic exploration of marine life, I aim to deepen our emotional and intellectual connections to these ecosystems. By highlighting the beauty and significance of marine life, I hope to inspire both appreciation and a commitment to preserving these vital ecosystems, encouraging viewers to consider their role in this effort.

With a focus on ocean environmental advocacy, Mayali commits to shedding light on the numerous challenges faced by marine life, including pollution, overfishing, illegal fishing, climate change, and habitat destruction. Her artistic process is anchored in meticulous research, the conscientious use of materials—often sourced sustainably or repurposed—and the incorporation of interactive elements. Mayali's immersive installation confronts viewers with the urgent narrative of ocean conservation. She urges viewers to grasp the vital role of the ocean and its inhabitants in sustaining our planet's health, while inspiring collective action to defend its fragility.
The ocean provides habitat for countless marine animals and plants that are integral to the overall health of the planet. From the vibrant coral reefs to lush seagrass beds, these inhabitants play a crucial role in the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Approximately 50% of the Earth's oxygen originates from the diverse marine plants, which absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and help stabilize global temperatures. Furthermore, marine life serves as a vital source of sustenance and medicinal resources for countless communities worldwide. Extending beyond the seafood industry, the ocean has economic benefits, such as tourist destinations and recreation activities; including swimming, surfing, diving, fishing, and boating.
The ocean holds a profound place in the hearts of many, with deep personal, cultural, and spiritual significance. There are many myths, stories, and rituals associated with the wonders of the ocean. For Mayali, the ocean has always been a source of serenity and inspiration, igniting her passion for its protection and preservation.
